class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verifying the authenticity of visual sources in the age of AI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/cyberschool.univ-rennes.fr\/en\/about\/our-events\/cyber-thursdays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cyber Thursdays<\/a><\/em> resumed this year with a new format: <strong>each session begins with a technical introduction<\/strong>, giving the floor to a local expert to present a concrete issue and the solutions developed to address it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first guest, <strong>Mathieu Desoubeaux<\/strong>, CEO and co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imatag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IMATAG<\/a>, opened the evening by outlining the <strong>challenges and technical hurdles<\/strong> researchers are tackling to <strong>help journalists ensure the authenticity of visual sources<\/strong>, where in the age of AI, reality and fiction can easily be confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He elaborated on the two main areas of work pursued by his teams, based on their expertise in watermarking and metadata management:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Digital watermarking<\/strong> to protect images and certify their authenticity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Detection and monitoring of AI-generated video content.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deepfakes and manipulation campaigns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mathieu Desoubeaux<\/strong> then joined a panel discussion with<strong> Pierre-Yves Baillet<\/strong> (Photojournalist, co-founder of the collective <em>Reporters de Guerre Frog of War<\/em>), <strong>Vincent Berthier<\/strong> (Head of the Technology and Journalism Desk, <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reporters Sans Fronti\u00e8res<\/a>), <strong>Florian Girard <\/strong>(Information Security Architect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groupe-sipa-ouest-france.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ouest-France Groupe SIPA<\/a>), and <strong>Brice Le Borgne <\/strong>(Data and Open-Source Investigative Journalist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/\">Lib\u00e9ration<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The five panelists debated several major issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cyberattacks targeting media outlets<\/strong> (phishing, ransomware, DDoS\u2026).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Journalist safety<\/strong>, facing cyberharassment, identity theft, and, in the field, difficulties controlling sources or even personal safety, particularly for war correspondents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The challenges of fact-checking<\/strong> as the line between true and false becomes increasingly blurred.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The industrialisation of disinformation<\/strong>, fuelled by ever more sophisticated AI tools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Changes in information consumption<\/strong>, with Facebook declining in favour of TikTok and Instagram.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The speakers <strong>shared striking, sometimes impressive anecdotes<\/strong>, and raised important societal questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening was a success, attracting <strong>over 120 participants and a diverse group of students<\/strong> engaged with the topic and discussions.
